SDG Publishing is the organization behind the development and distribution of Essential Practices. SDG is a for-profit, organization dedicated to helping people learn to put into practice what they hear in church and read in the Bible.
The name “SDG” stands for Soli Deo Gloria, a Latin term for “Glory to God alone.” The founders decided the SDG name would help the organization to remember to give God the glory for all that is accomplished.
Essential Practices Volume 1 was developed by a team of theologians, pastors, small group leaders, writers, and people with experience in accelerated learning processes. The primary authoring team was made up of:
Jeff creates experientially-based spiritual formation resources that position people to experience Jesus. He does that through short stories, small group curriculum, and other resources. He currently serves as the CEO of HCM International. Jeff has a Master’s degree in counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary.
Matt teaches in the areas of self-care, soul-care, adult discipleship, and leadership coaching. He specializes in helping pastors renew their spiritual vitality. Matt has coached church planters, missionaries, and business leaders for more than a decade. He has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Ashland Theological Seminary.
Garnett is a former church planter and large church pastor and is currently a professor at Vanderbilt University and executive leadership consultant. Prior to church ministry, he ran several successful companies (including an NBA team). Garnett is a Duke grad, a Harvard MBA, and holds a Masters of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary.
The authoring team embraces the Nicene Creed as the definition of Christianity.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
